Volcan Pacaya

Elevation 7,400ft/2,255m

Upon one day of entering the country of Guatemala, I visited Volcan Pacaya. The most recent eruption of this volcano was in 2010, resulting in fields of lava surrounding the volcano. As the magma dried, it became acres of dried lava fields that stretch on for miles and give the impression that you are on another planet. It was the most unique hike I’ve ever been on. So, you can understand my surprise when I discovered a pizza joint, with an oven built into the rock, right there on the mountain. It was a great welcome to the country.

It’s so surreal to know that under my feet, there is a cauldron of lava that is just waiting for it’s chance to come erupting to the surface.

Like another planet

I couldn’t pass up this photo op. Just how many chances will you get to stand upon what was only a few years ago, a flowing river of magma?
