Semuc Champey

Semuc Champey is a natural monument located near the town of Lanquin, Guatemala. To reach this beautiful piece of nature, it took a 45-minute bumpy ride through the jungle in the back of a truck. The ride in and of itself was absolutely gorgeous, but I had no idea how beautiful it was going to be once I arrived. The powerful river that flows through the valley of Semuc Champey actually flows underground through a cave system. But above the river is a series of crystal-clear pools that are calm and relaxing. They were just what were needed after a hike through the jungle. The hike itself is steep and very muddy but optional to all visitors. It takes you to a lookout point high above the river and grants the most amazing of views. Even though I’m afraid of heights, I felt more awe than fear.

Rio Cahabón

The Cahabón is 122 miles and travels from the town of Tactic, Guatemala to the Caribbean Sea. But when it passes through Semuc Champey, it takes an underground detour.

The best views are always from above

It was one crazy slippery hike to get way up here, and it was so worth it.
