The journey is the best part
The Quilotoa loop is a 35 kilometer trek through the beautiful green landscape of the Ecuadorian Andes from Sigchos to Laguna Quilotoa. The lake, which is located in the bed of a volcanic crater, is the end destination for the trek, but the trek itself, is a wonder on it’s own.
If you are as fortunate as I was and able to hike in clear weather, the views across the valleys are extraordinary. The hike is very casual until the last day when you gain quite a bit of altitude climbing to the crater rim. The farmland backdrop of rural Ecuador made the trek visually stunning. Make sure to have plenty of water and snacks because you won’t be running across too many people or any stores. But you may run into a random school with a bunch of kids at play, or a random farmer leading a flock.
Made it in time to watch the sunset
On clear enough days, you can see for 50 miles in all directions. Once in the town, there is not much to do besides try some restaurant and coffee shops. Just make sure to bring cash.

This of course depends on the time of year that you visit. Keep in mind that the seasons in the southern hemisphere are opposite than the northern hemisphere. I went in October. It was cool, and I got a little bit of light rain but nothing serious. The wind was a bit intense though. And for that, I’d recommend having a coat or extra layers.

Absolutely. Along the trail, I didn’t encounter a single restaurant or hotel/hostel that accepted cards. Unless you’re carrying all of your food supplies and camping gear, make sure to bring cash.

No part of the trek had any technical difficulty. However, if you are not acclimated to the high altitude, or in good shape, the uphill sections will be a bit of a problem.

From the capital of Quito, you’ll need to catch a bus to the town of Latacunga. From there, you can take either a bus or taxi to Sigchos. Follow the signage, or ask the friendly locals where the trailhead is. Once on the trail, it is simple to follow the signs.
