Laguna de los Tres
Date: April 2nd, 2023
Location: Nacional Parque de Los Glaciares, El Chalten, Argentina
There are few travelers who come to Patagonia without the plan to go hiking. I’ve heard it described as a hiker’s paradise. And for those hikers and adventurers, the town of El Chalten is at the forefront of their hiking goals because of this one spectacular mountain. Fitz Roy.
This was the view awaiting me as I approached the town of El Chalten and I never imagined that it would be so majestic. The sun’s rays and the clouds added to the ominous yet beautiful view. While I doubt that I will ever be adventurous enough to climb one of the peaks of Fitz Roy, I was more than ready to hike up to Laguna de Los Tres. This turquoise alpine lake sits near the base of this epic monolith. But before even reaching the lake, there is beauty to experience. The near 14-mile trail is filled with bushes that ranged from purple to orange, golden-leafed trees and bright red-headed woodpeckers among the branches. The last kilometer was the true test of endurance and fitness, but nothing the average person with a touch of willpower couldn’t achieve.
The halfway point of a 14-mile hike
Despite the sun shining, it was cold as ice and windy enough to make you lose your balance. But worth every step
The colors of Autumn
Traveling to Patagonia during the fall may dissuade some people due to how crisp and windy it can be. But it’s during these months when you see how bright and colorful the land is. This was the view near the beginning of the hike. In the top right of the photo, you can make out the peaks of Fitz Roy.
The trail is just as beautiful as the destination
This is one of the many glaciers in The Glacier National Park. This beautiful view awaits any travelers who hike the trail to Laguna de los Tres from El Rio Electrico.
