I’m not going to pretend that I know where the name for this pass came from, but this trail gave me my first taste of winter hiking. Before, I’d only been on hikes in the jungle, in warm weather, and with as few clothes as decently possible. Hiking in the snow caused me to obviously have to adjust my wardrobe, but it provided a wonderful white landscape dotted with patches of green and gray. The Black Powder Pass passes next to the Boreas Mountain, from who’s summit on a clear day, you can see for 50 miles in every direction. As this was my first solo snow hike, and I was already 2 hours along the trail, I chose not to go for the summit. No matter, the view was still spectacular.
